Sandia Vista Elementary Awarded Green Ribbon School Designation
Posted on 07/28/2017

Sandia Vista Elementary is one of only 45 schools nationwide – and the only one in New Mexico – to earn recognition this year as a U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School!   Principal Pat DiVasto and members of the team traveled to Washington, D. C. in July to accept the award.

Sandia Vista Elementary SchoolThis award recognizes schools and school districts that show progress and excellence in three areas: reduction of environmental impact and costs, improving the health and wellness of students and staff, and providing environmental education across disciplines and effectively incorporating STEM, civic skills, and green career pathways.  The application must be endorsed by and is submitted by a state’s education authority (in our case, the state's Public Schools Facilities Authority).

SVE walk and roll 2012Sandia Vista Elementary enrolls about 630 students, about 150 of whom are in the district's preschool and elementary Montessori program.  The school's comprehensive sustainability-related programs encompass both energy-saving and environmentally-responsible programs and strategies to improve student and staff health and wellness and establish lifelong healthy habits. (The photo at left shows students participating in Walk 'n' Roll to School.)  Students are actively involved at every level of the program.  The Sandia Vista profile in the awardee information (see link below) details the long list of programs and activities.
